Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates comprising four groups - lizards, crocodiles, turtles and tortoises. Fossil evidence suggests they first appeared on Earth around 350 million years ago. The first bird appeared around 140 million years ago, having evolved from bipedal theropod dinosaurs. They did not fill the skies until after they survived the mass extinction 65 million years ago.
