Q: How do I register to use the site?

A: From the Home Page select ?Register? from the blue panel on the right hand side of the screen. You will be asked whether you already have an account with us, if you do you will be asked for your account number, or your company name and surname. If you are not sure then please click ?not sure? and follow the instructions on-screen and a member of Picture Library staff will get in touch with you.

Q: How do I use the lightboxes?

A: Firstly, you must be a registered user to access these functions. Once you have registered you can save your searches in a collection called a lightbox. To add pictures to your lightbox simply click on the ?Add to lightbox? link beneath the image. You can add as many images to your lightbox as you like, and there is no limit to the number of lightboxes you can save. You can re-name, print your lightboxes, or e-mail them to your colleagues.

Q: How do I use the Shopping Cart?

A: The Shopping Cart enables you to download image files, clear and pay for reproduction rights in one stage. To use the Shopping Cart click on the picture you would like to buy. You will then see the image with it?s caption, and an option to ?Add to the Shopping Cart?. Click on this link and your picture is in the Shopping Cart. If you want more than one image use the ?Back to search results? button to carry on shopping until all the images you want to buy are in the Shopping Cart. To calculate a price for each image click on ?Calculate Price? and follow the instructions on screen. If the usage you need is not listed you will need to contact us and arrange a quote. Once you have calculated a price for all the images you want to use click on the ?Checkout? button at the bottom of the page. You will be shown our terms and conditions, and a summary of your order ? to accept these click on the ?Make Payment? button at the bottom of the page. You will then be transferred to the World Pay site where you will be required to give credit card details. To be continued

Q: What do I do if I want to buy online but my usage isn?t standard?

A: To use images for a purpose which is not listed then you will need to request a quote. You can do this online by clicking on the picture you would like to buy and selecting ?Request a Quote?. You will be asked some basic questions about your proposed usage and these details will then be passed to Picture Library staff. When they have prepared a quote you will be advised, by e-mail, that your quote is ready and can be viewed online. To do this you go to the blue panel on the right hand side, and click on ?View pending and new quotes? ? you will then be able to see our costs for the usages you?ve requested. Q: How do I obtain permission to use pictures from The Natural History Museum?

A: Once you have selected the images you wish to use click on ?request a quote?. We will advise you of the appropriate fees which are based on the rights you need to clear e.g. the territory, the print run, and the size the image is to be used. Reproduction permission is granted only when the invoice has been paid

Q: How should I credit pictures from The Natural History Museum Picture Library?

A: Our credit line is © The Natural History Museum, London. This must be used wherever one of our images is reproduced. We have many contributors who should be credited as well but we will advise you of this where appropriate.

Q: What if you don't have the pictures I need?

A: We are happy to offer our bespoke service where you choose precisely what you want from the Museum?s vast collections, and our photographers will photograph them to your specifications. Please see the Bespoke Service page for further details.

Q: Can I take photographs inside The Natural History Museum?

A: Photography is permitted providing it is strictly for private and personal use only. A handheld camera may be used but tripods, lighting, or other equipment is not allowed during opening times. If you would like to photograph the Museum and its contents for professional purposes please contact us to arrange this. Please note that a facility fee will be charged

Q: How do I order pictures?

A: First select the images you would like, then choose one of the following options: 1. Shopping Cart - place your images in the Shopping Cart, purchase a license and then download the images. 2. Lightbox - save the images into a Lightbox, then email the Lightbox to nhmpl@nhm.ac.uk 3. Contact us by telephone, fax, email or by post quoting the image references.

Q: How do I use the online Picture Library to search for pictures?

A: To browse click on any one of our collection images or click on the title bar at the top of the page. You can then look at the whole collection by clicking on ?Browse all images in this collection?, or you can look at the categories within the collection by clicking on the category images, or clicking on the lower title bar. To search for specific images enter your keyword or keywords in the search box on the blue panel on the right hand side of the screen, then click search. Your search results will be returned as thumbnail images. To view them in more detail, and to see the full caption information either click on the image itself, or select ?View Details? below the image. For more detailed information on the search functions click on the ??? icon within the search section.

Q: Are all the Images in the Picture Library available online?

A: There are currently around 40,000 images in the Picture Library and of these around 30,000 are available online. We?re adding new pictures every day, as well as increasing our stock of high resolution image files.

Q: How much do pictures cost?

A: Reproduction fees will depend on the rights required and the nature of use. Please contact us for a quotation, either by phone, fax, or e-mail (nhmpl-online@nhm.ac.uk) or select the image you want to use and click on ?request a quote?. All sales of image licenses contributes toward the upkeep of The Natural History Museum.

Q: What if you don?t have high resolution digital files in stock?

A: We can have high resolution scans made for you at a cost of £12.50 per image.
