MOSES HARRIS
From our Entomology Library we are pleased to introduce 39 colour illustrations from ?The Aurelian: or, Natural History of Insects; Namely Moths and Butterflies together with the plants on which they fed? by Moses Harris (1731-1785). Harris was first noted for his work on colour theory which culminated in his publication entitled ?The Natural System of Colours? (1766). However, as the most pioneering entomologist of the late eighteenth century in England, it was his ?Natural History of Insects? that is now widely regarded as his finest work, and arguably the finest entomological study of its time in the UK. The colour plates presented here were engraved by him, each insect being fully described in the following pages. |

IMAGES OF EXTINCT ANIMALS
Julian's exceptionally strong images are based on his accurate understanding of zoology - he has a science degree and is currently researching for a PhD on fossil birds of Mauritius. This knowledge informs his work as all illustrations are derived from contemporary accounts, fossil material and old museum skins. Julian has exhibited his work in the Darwin Centre, University Museum, Cambridge, Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum in Tring and at many venues overseas.
